Info about fort meade maryland?

my husband, toddler & i are moving there soon. the things i have read dont sound so good. wondering if there are any pointers? like should we live on post or off post? is it safe for my son with all the gas leaks? what should i do about all the power outages? and what about subways? ive heard you get mugged! what would i do with my son? im nervous now that i read other answers.. maybe someone else has different opinions?? please help!
