How do I transfer data from an external hard drive back to my computer?

My laptop got a virus so I had to reboot it. In order to not lose any of my music, pictures, etc...I bought an external hard drive and transferred all the stuff onto it. Now that I rebooted the computer and plugged the External hard drive in I don't know what to do. I have Windows 7 if that's any help.
